Fire safety tips

Prevention saves lives — and homes.

Most home fires are preventable. Follow these six tips to protect your family and reduce the risk before it starts.

  • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries every year.
  • Plan two escape routes from every room and practice with your family.
  • Never leave cooking unattended — kitchen fires are the leading cause of home fires.
  • Keep a 3-foot clear zone around space heaters and never leave them on while sleeping.
  • Store flammable liquids in approved containers, away from heat sources.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually if you use a fireplace.
